Summary

China-Canada Conference on the Impact of Climate Change on Vector-borne and Waterborne Diseases

 May 21-24, 2008

Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing China

This China-Canada conference on the Impact of Climate Change on Vector-borne and Waterborne Diseases took place in Nanjing Normal University from May 21-24, 2008. There were more than 60 active experts and researchers in the field from Canada, United States, Japan and China participated the conference. Among the participants, there were also experts and public health officials from the China national and Jiangsu provincial centers of disease control and experts from Public Health Agency of Canada.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Lecture Professor of Nanjing Normal University and Professor of York University of Canada, Huaiping Zhu. President and Professor Yongzhong Song presented the opening ceremony and gave a welcoming speech. Professor Song greeted and warmly welcomed the participants, he introduced the history and fast development of Nanjing Normal University. He also introduced the School of Mathematics and Computer Science. Since China was mourning the victims of the Wenchuan earthquake from May 19 to 21, Mr. President asked all to join him to stand up and silently mourn for one minute. He ended his speech with the best wishes for the great success of the conference.

The main themes of the conference are the impact of climate change on Vector-borne and Waterborne Diseases, hence all the 33 invited talks were organized into 3 groups: mosquito-borne diseases, schistosomiasis and waterborne diseases, and aspects of mathematics and others. Each invited speaker has 30 minutes to present and followed by active discussions among the audience and the speaker. The graduate students and young researchers showed great interests in the problems of the
arising fields, and benefited a lot from the close discussion with the speakers. During the conference, there are three round-table discussions. This conference served as an excellent platform to induce further collaborations and networking and contacts among epidemiologists and mathematical modelers as well as health administrative personnel on the topics of climate change and emerging/reemerging vector-borne and waterborne diseases.

This conference was supported by Nanjing Normal University, School of Mathematics and Computer Science of Nanjing Normal University, Mathematical Center of Chinese Education Ministry, Center for Disease Modeling, York University and Public Health Agency of Canada. As part of the joint program of international collaborations of the Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems ( MITACS) Canada, a Canada-China joint program led by Professor Jianhong Wu, Professor and Canadian Research Chair, on modeling and prediction of infectious diseases, this conference was also supported by MITACS and The
International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada.

Professor Jingan Cui Chaired the closing round-table discussion. During the discussion, many of the participants, including the graduate students thanked and highly praised the great success of the conference, and participants from both China and Canada discussed the further national and international collaborations on the topics and hope that the conference could continue in the years to come.
